My daughter’s newest obsession is Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood on PBS. It’s a play off “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood”, with some of the same characters in his Neighborhood of Make-Believe. The show follows Daniel Tiger and his family and friends as they face good times and bad times and learn some pretty valuable lessons that are great for pre-school aged kids see. It’s absolutely adorable, and my kid refuses to move when its on, which can be a great thing if I need to get something done in 30 minutes, like cook!
But there is just one thing….the songs! Its called a ‘Musical Motif’ phrase, which helps children learn and understand the meanings of each episode, but the repetition will be stuck in your head for days, weeks, maybe months. I go to sleep at night with Daniel Tiger songs stuck in my head and usually wake up with them too. By the end of 1 episode you will be singing the damn song for the rest of the night. Remember when it would be the latest songs on MTV stuck in your head for days? Funny how things drastically change when children enter your life!
I can’t for the life of me name a popular song on the radio right now, but I can recite for you word by word the song from the episode “Prince Wednesday Goes To The Potty”. There is something seriously wrong with this picture!
Sigh…..
