My awesome friend sent me a little preggo package when we announced we were having another baby. When I opened the box there were a giant container of chocolate covered pretzels (sweet & salty-can’t beat that!) and a book, Preggatinis: Mixology for the Mom-to-Be by Natlie Bovis-Nelson.
For everyone who knows me knows that giving up my wonderful friends vodka and vino for 10 months is the hardest. The only consecutive months I have had of sobriety have been while pregnant! So I was beyond thrilled to see this book full of yummy non-alcholic “mocktails”. Pregnant ladies shouldn’t feel left out of the group of drinkers by sipping on plain old water. We need to shake things up a bit, have a fruity treat served in a cool glass.
When I opened the book and started reading, I was pleasantly surprised it was a book by a fellow blogger (she mixes up at theliquidmuse.com) who shares the affinity for a delicious libation! She wants us fatty preggos to feel apart of the scene still and I applaud that! Cause lets face it, being the only sober one around a bunch of drunk idiots is the worst – least they could do is give me a yummy non-alcoholic drink to help ease the pain!
The book takes you from pre-pregnancy with some great aphrodisiac-type drinks such as the Oyster Shot, then into the 1st, 2nd & 3rd trimesters with drinkable treats perfect for each.
I absolutely love this book and it couldn’t be more appropriate for the suppressed alchy inside! It actually got me inspired to try to create my own Preggatini-style drink. So I checked out what I had in my fridge and pantry and came up with this:
The AntiMom-tini
- 5 Strawberries, stems off and muddled
- Juice from 1/2 an Orange
- 1/4 cup Pear Nectar
- Splash of Club Soda
- Slice of Orange & 1 Strawberry for garnish
Clean and cut the strawberries. If you have the proper utensils to muddle strawberries-get muddlin’. I used my immersion blender to help the process along. Combine strawberries & fresh orange juice and blend to a smooth consistency. If you don’t care for the strawberry seeds to accumulate in the bottom of the glass, strain the mixture to fish out the seeds. In a shaker, add berry & orange mixture with ice and pear nectar. Shake it good to get it nice and cold. Pour into a martini glass, top with club soda and garnish with fruit.
Your preggo will be happy and satisfied. Although probably wishing there was vodka in it. I gulped it down pretty quickly, so doubling the recipe might be a good idea! And for you non-preggos out there, just sub out the club soda for vodka.
Thank you to my kickass friend Shann for the book and inspiring me to stop sulking about my alcohol hiatus and start mixing some damn good treats!!
