It’ never a dull moment in our household.
While preparing dinner last week, Little O’s was crawling around wreaking havoc, as usual. She made her way into the pantry and somehow pulled on the 5 liter jug of Olive Oil I had just bought. Thank you, Bertolli for making an awful cap that won’t screw on tight. Seriously, you’d think they’d use a tighter screw lid on 5 freakin’ liters of oil and not one that you turn 3 times then it loosens again. Bleeh. Anyways, she is freakishly strong for a 9 month old because those little muscles knocked it over and out came at least a liter of olive oil on the floor and on O’s chubby little legs.
Thankfully I was right there to grab it before more of that damn expensive bottle spilled and praise baby Jesus that it was plastic not glass. So, what the hell do we do now that my floor is covered in olive oil?! My husband quickly Googled and the first thing he found said to use Dawn. Fantastic because I use Palmolive….Meh. Then came an article that saved our sanity.
This seriously worked like magic and I felt the need to share it with as many people as I can….the article stated that one simple pantry item will save your life in an oil spill and that my friends is OATMEAL! Yes, oatmeal: the red headed step child of the breakfast world.
In these 3 easy steps you will be back to your hectic life after a spill:
- Use paper towels to soak up the bulk of the oil.
- Generously sprinkle the oatmeal over the oiled area. Allow to sit for 10-15 minutes.
- Sweep up the oatmeal and like magic the oil residue is gone!
If you spilled a lot of oil, you may need to repeat step 2 a few times to get everything up.
I was fortunate to have 2 containers of oatmeal in my pantry, and after that little mishap, I will always be sure to have it in there!
Hope this helps anyone out there who has had a night like I did! A glass of wine or some vodka will also help.
