My baby started preschool yesterday! Cue the heavenly music now.
Probably not the kind of reaction you are guessing as my first born is off to school but I am! My husband, on the other hand, is a basket case and a total mess! Every time we talk about it shushes me and changes the subject. So you must be wondering how we fared as we piled in the car as a family and dropped our big Lil Diva off for her first day of school. Well, it went surprisingly well for her! She was so excited she could barely sleep the night before and even climbed into our bed at 3 a.m. I think the nerves got to her. We got a little teary eyed but new she was in good hands and having a great time. So I thought I’d throw my 2 cents in and share a few do’s and don’ts to help any first time parents deal with the emotional roller coast that is the first day of school:
DO take a crap load of pictures to remember this day by. Some at home, on the way (make sure you are not driving!), outside the building of the school, outside of their classroom and ones of them and their teacher. There will be a time when they will not let you do this, so take full advantage while they are young.
DON’T cry in front of them. At least wait til you are out of the building or have your sunglasses on.
DO make this day as special as you can. We have a couple surprises waiting for her when she gets out. Whether it be a trip to the ice cream store or a present, let them know you are proud!
DON’T add on their stress of nervousness. It’s probably the first time they are feeling nervous or anxious or excited or all three, make sure your emotions don’t trickle over to them and add on to theirs.
DO have a bottle of wine on hand for tonight or later this afternoon. This is an emotional day for everyone, we need a little pick me up to calm ourselves.
DON’T waste your free 3 (or 8) hours crying and worrying, they are probably having the time of their lives meeting new friends and experiencing all that is school! Go do some laundry, shopping or go lay on the couch while you have some free time.
DO enjoy every.single.moment of this day because it’s their first!
How was your kids first day?
